To celebrate International Women’s Day, we have prepared a small display to highlight the contribution of female authors and the range of our collections on women, feminism, and gender studies in Islam and Muslim contexts.
We want to use this Day to also highlight the excellent publications by some of our colleagues at The Institute of Ismaili Studies, and The Aga Khan University’s Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilisations on very relevant topics.
An Anthology of Qur’anic Commentaries, Vol. 2: On Women

This volume begins with a critical introduction to the study of women and gender in the genre of Qurʾanic commentaries. It follows key Qurʾanic terms in a chronological sequence, showing how the Qurʾan’s world view on women developed from the earliest Meccan revelations to the period of the final revelations in Medina.
The remainder of the volume translates, critically annotates, and analyses interpretations of six select Qurʾanic verses on women.
Anti-Veiling Campaigns in Turkey: State, Society and Gender in the Early Republic

Using previously unpublished archival material, Adak reveals the intricacies of the Kemalist modernisation process and provides a nuanced reading of the gender order established in the early republic by looking at the various ways women responded to the anti-veiling campaigns.
This book shifts the focus from the high politics of the elite to the implementation of state policies, situating the anti-veiling movements as a space where the Kemalist reforms were negotiated, compromised, and resisted by societal actors.
