Through his handwritten letters, diaries, and the recollections of family members, Noha El Kholy pieces together the life of her great-grandfather, Mohamed Abdallah Draz: Azharite scholar, loving father, and ardent proponent of an Islamic morality rooted in love and tolerance.

The journey unfolds from his native village of Mahallet Diyay, where four generations of the Draz family reconnect with their roots; to Paris, where M.A. Draz’s sons, Mohsen and Sami, reminisce over their childhood in war-torn France and their father’s devotion to his family and work.

Along the way, scholars, experts, and strangers recount the impact of his writing and radio-broadcast sermons on their own relationship to faith — reviving a legacy since overshadowed by mounting religious austerity.
