We offer a part-time (3 days per week) permanent contract for a library assistant with previous experience working in academic libraries.
SALARY – Salary c. £13,500
JOB PURPOSE
The Library Assistant will be responsible for helping users with the resolution of first-line enquiries about accessing our collections. They will also perform other key frontline activities such as welcoming users to the library, carrying out timely and accurate shelving, and collaborating in wider circulation and collection management tasks. The post holder will also support library operations and work closely with other librarians in required administrative tasks.
The key accountabilities of the post holder will be:
- Front-line services to the users: welcoming, answering queries, helping them locate materials on the shelves, circulation, etc.
- Shelving of new arrivals, and timely reshelving of returned materials.
- Maintenance of library and study spaces.
- Technical processing of backlog and new acquisitions.
- Preparation and reception of interlibrary loans.
- Preparation of books for external binding and conservation.
- Administrative support around financial and academic yearly milestones.
- Preparing and submitting purchase orders for the Library..
- Other secretarial and administrative tasks (events organisation, correspondence, post collection, etc.) as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
Previous experience working as a library assistant, preferably in academic or special libraries.
This position doesn’t require an academic degree, however, candidates willing to work towards a degree in the fields of Islamic or Middle Eastern studies, or Library and Information Science would have an advantage.
ESSENTIAL criteria
- Experience working in libraries
- Experience using Library Management Systems and online catalogues to answer queries
- Good literacy and numeracy skills
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Advanced use of Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Publisher, etc.)
DESIRABLE selection criteria
- Knowledge of any Middle East, South Asian or Central Asian language.
- Previous experience arranging collections with the Library of Congress Classification.
- Cataloguing experience
- Notes / minute taking and report writing

- Can do careful, detailed work and carry tasks through completion.
- Ability to prioritise tasks, multi-task and manage time effectively and efficiently
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in English; able to communicate with a variety of individuals at all levels.
